Lucid Dreaming

February 25, 2011

During my research into the vast subject that is the subconscious. I stumbled upon the concept of Lucid Dreaming. At first I thought that this was a fringe stuff and had probably no scientific backing, but apparently it has been tested under strict lab settings and proved possible.

The idea is that by preparing yourself using numerous techniques you can (with practice) take full control of your dreams and affect the outcome. Reports show that people have been able to recall forgotten languages they had learned, achieve a zen-like state removing needless stress, and accelerated skill acquisition.

Here are a few links if you fancy giving it a go yourself, I know that I am going to – imagine being able to dive into your mind and essentially re-teach yourself forgotten skills. Either that or just fly around pretending to be superman.

D&AD Development

February 22, 2011

Our idea for the upcoming design competition brief has been refined severely since we settled on our concept. The original idea was a good one but became muddled due to the amount of directions we were taking and we desperately needed to step back and gain some perspective on the whole thing. With some advice from our tutors we have now managed to co-ordinate our plan and focus on the presentation of our piece which is now going well. The difficulties we are now facing are to do with selectivity of the information we present which is being laid out in an infographic.

We have contacted industry professionals to investigate the logistics and find out all the necessary facts and figures to check that our idea is achievable. During this research phase I found an example of something using a similar process that had been done a few years back. Although mildly annoying that this had been done before it help confirm in our minds that we are not developing something that was unachievable.

Our idea is strong, all that remains is for us to make it clear and easily read by the judges and a yellow pencil could be coming our way.

Trying out a few ways to present a piece I’m working on. Icons are working best at the moment but thought I would play with some vector illustrations to see if they work.

Found this whilst researching for an upcoming project. The speed at which technology is progressing is just insane, where will we be in ten years time? Its a good time to be alive!

Final major project

February 12, 2011

The eagerly awaited final major project is upon us at University and the ideas that I have heard coming out of the other students have been fantastic and I am looking forward to seeing things coming together.

I have decided to introduce my love for psychology into my FMP. Although I have never had any formal education in it, It is a subject I study in my personal time and is all I read in terms of literature. The main focus of my project will be the subconscious and how the implementation of ideas in peoples minds can cause them to react. One of the names given to this study is ‘Perception Without Awareness’ and I have been researching several leaders within these fields of social psychology.

Some of the experiments conducted are incredible and show that priming people without them realising can affect behavior. John Bargh is a social psychologist who has conducted several studies in mood alteration using priming techniques. In one experiment he gave students a list of ten sentences which were scrambled and asked them to rearrange them to make sense. Within each sentence words like ‘old’ and ‘grey’ were included as well as other semantically associated words with aged people. As people left the office they were noted as walking away considerably slower than the control group who did not have these primers included in their sentences. In another study, he did the same experiment but using words associated with rudeness which saw subjects interrupt a tutor when leaving the room.

I plan on conducting several experiments of my own to see if I can use graphic systems to influence people and subconsciously affect their behavior. This project will teach me skills that will definitely prove useful in my career in advertising.

Awesome projection mapping onto a circuit board.
